‘Missed chance’? AP headline just doesn’t do the EPA’s toxic incompetence justice

Remember this past Augustwhen the EPAreleased severalmillion yes, million gallons of toxic wastewater into theAnimas River?

Well, an investigation by the Interior Departmenthas concluded that the EPA was indeed responsible. Who’d’a thunk it?

Via Sen. Barrasso:

Literally and figuratively, the EPA blew it. The governments own report directly refutes the EPAs claim that a toxic spill that caused 3 million gallons of toxic wastewater from the Gold King Mine to poison rivers in three states was likely inevitable. Responsibility for this disaster lands directly on the EPAs doorstep. I want to know who at the EPA will be held accountable for this disaster.

From the Washington Examiner:

Government investigators say the spill at the King Gold Mine in Colorado was caused when a cleanup crew rushed its work, triggering the blowout it hoped to avoid, the Associated Press reported, which obtained a copy of the agency’s report on the investigation.

The probe by the Interior Department found the spill would have been avoided if the EPA had checked on the water levels before digging into the mine, according to AP.

And speaking of the AP, here’s how they reported the news:

“Missed chance”? Really?

That’s more like it.

Rihanna to the NFL: ‘F*** you!’

http://twitter.com/#!/rihanna/status/511844530375892992

She does have a point as it looked like the NFL canceled her appearance last Thursday because she was a past victim of domestic who had reconciled with her abuser:

CBS you pulled my song last week, now you wanna slide it back in this Thursday? NO, Fuck you! Y'all are sad for penalizing me for this.

— Rihanna (@rihanna) September 16, 2014

FWIW, the NFL said that she was cancelled not because of her past history, but because of the overall “tone” of the broadcast:

“We thought journalistically and from a tone standpoint, we needed to have the appropriate tone and coverage,” CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus told SI.com last week of the decision to bump Rihanna’s intro, among other features. “A lot of the production elements we wanted in the show are being eliminated because of time or tone.”

Now the “tone” has changed an it’s okay for her show? The fact is that Rihanna and her abuser, Chris Brown, are a known “on-again off-again couple.” The NFL is in a bind because there’s no way to decouple Rihanna’s abuse with the forgiveness of her abuser, but the NFL also doesn’t want to take into consideration Ray Rice’s wife’s forgiveness as it decides on his punishment.

And even worse for the NFL, they now look stupider than before for asking Rihanna to perform again only to get f-bombed for their outreach.

The fence-jumper who managed to make it inside the front doors of the White House Friday night armed with a knife had 800 rounds of ammo in his car, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors say WH fence jumper suspect had more than 800 rounds of ammunition in car, along with two hatchets and a machete

Initial word from Secret Service was that Gonzalez was unarmed. Day later, it came out he had a knife. Today, 800 rounds of ammo in his car

This was not Omar Gonzales’ first run-in with the law and White House security.

In an unrelated July 19 incident in VA Gonzalez was arrested carrying a sawed-off shotgun & map of Washington with the White House circled

Accused WH fence jumper Omar Gonzales stopped by WH August 25. Had a hatchet with him. Was not arrested.

In addition to White House, prosecutors say Gonzalez also had Masonic temple in Alexandria circled on DC area map found in car in August.

News that Gonzalez had 800 rounds of ammo didn’t help boost Americans’ sense of security.

With little going on in the world, CBS News producer says Secretary of State John Kerry enjoys quiet time on his yacht; Update: Dept. of State denies

http://twitter.com/#!/Mosheh/status/352526314433040385

And why not?  After all, it’s a very quiet and peaceful day on the international front.

Just be grateful Kerry didn’t show off an expensive water toy, such as a jet ski.

Update:

Update:

CBS News’ Boston affiliate says the Department of State says the report from CBS This Morning senior producer Mosheh Oinounou is completely made up:

Kerry spokesperson Jen Psaki denied the report.

“Since his plane touched down in Washington at 4 am, Secretary Kerry was working all day and on the phone dealing with the crisis in Egypt,” Psaki said in a statement.

Kerry was absent from a White House photo showing President Obama meeting with members of his national security team to discuss the situation in Egypt, but Psaki said he had dialed in on a secure phone line for that meeting.

“He participated in the White House meeting with the President by secure phone and was and is in non-stop contact with foreign leaders, and his senior team in Washington and Cairo.”

As of 10:21 p.m. ET, Oinounou has not run a retraction and has not removed his tweet.

We have modified our headline to clarify that the original report was based on a claim made by Oinounou. We will monitor this situation and will report any updates.

Update:

If Sec. Kerry was in Washington DC since 4 a.m. today, this Nantucket-based reporter must have been mistaken:

http://twitter.com/#!/JasonGraziadei/status/352456479506300929

And why, if Kerry was in DC , did he participate in a key White House meeting by phone rather than in person?

Just wondering.
