Woman dies after beating in Cali., Iraqi immigrant

From CNN:

An Iraqi woman who was left brutally beaten in her Southern California home with an apparently xenophobic note beside her has died.

Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old mother of five, was taken off life support Saturday, said the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), an organization that advocates for Muslim civil liberties.

She had been on life support since Wednesday when her teenage daughter found her unconscious in the living room of their home in El Cajon in San Diego County.

“During the initial stages of this investigation, a threatening note was discovered very close to where the victim was found,” Lt. Mark Coit of the El Cajon police said.

Authorities would not specify what the note said. But Alawadi’s daughter said it threatened the family to go back to Iraq and called them “terrorists.”

Police said a similar note was left outside the family home earlier in the month, but the family did not report it.

“A week ago they left a letter saying, ‘This is our country, not yours, you terrorists,’” the daughter, Fatima Alhamidi told CNN affiliate KGTV. “So my mom ignored that, thinking (it was) kids playing around, pranking. And so the day they hurt her, they left it again and it said the same thing.”

Anthony Cumia calls Patton Oswalt on supporting small business and Obama

Obama supporters (not to mention the president himself) sure are high on job-creating small businesses these last few days. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney and Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid were just two who tweeted their support of “You Didn’t Build That Saturday” — sorry, “Small Business Saturday.” President Obama himself made a high-profile trip to a local bookstore.

Comedian Patton Oswalt has found two small businesses in L.A., a paper maker and a print shop, that are too hip to fail. Anthony Cumia of the “Opie and Anthony” radio show, though, has also noticed an uptick in interest in the survival of small businesses.

Well @pattonoswalt , I watched the video. How do you push Obama for months then want to help failing small businss.? It’s one or the other.

— Anthony Cumia (@AnthonyCumia) November 26, 2012

@anthonycumia @pattonoswalt patton, comment?

— Passion Addict (@FuckClark) November 26, 2012

No witty rejoinder yet, but we imagine it would go something like this.

@anthonycumia @pattonoswalt Because SHUT UP RACIST!!!

— Neon Taster (@neontaster) November 26, 2012

@anthonycumia It FELT good to root for Obama, and it FEELS good to root for small businesses. That’s liberalism for you! @pattonoswalt

— Kensington (@NYKensington) November 26, 2012

@anthonycumia @pattonoswalt Wow, Cumia. Not saying Patton’s right, but your response is embarrassingly nonsensical.

— Kevin Abessi (@kaproteus) November 26, 2012

Nonsensical? No, this is nonsensical. Out? Blame Bush. In? Blame Walmart. Oswalt responds to the right-wing douchebags cluttering his timeline.

(1 of 3) Hey pitiless, faux-alpha right-wing douchebags — the fact that most small business simply want to make a livable profit…

— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) November 26, 2012

(2 of 3) …and not grow into an engulfing behemoth like WalMart and decimate every competitor in their path…

— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) November 26, 2012

(3 of 3) …DOESN’T make ‘em “enemies of capitalism”. You can succeed here WITHOUT everyone else failing. It’s why America’s the best.

— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) November 26, 2012

@awkwardpress @pattonoswalt what’s anti-american about just being happy making a living? not conquering.

— Azures (@shirorx) November 26, 2012

So, small business owners: is it true that most of you just want to make a livable profit from those businesses you didn’t build? If your ambitions aren’t any higher than that, a second Obama term might be the right business climate for you. Be sure to close up before you get too successful, though, and start hurting your competitors. Cool?

Hey, @anthonycumia? Can we put a pin in this? I have no problem or animosity about arguing with you. But I have to go run errands. Cool?

Penn. state senator uses erectile dysfunction bill to hit back at pre-abortion ultrasounds

A Pennsylvania state senator has decided to introduce a bill requiring men to undergo treatment for erectile dysfunction. He’s doing this to illustrate that forcing men to jump through hoops to receive ED treatment and therapy is equivalent to giving women ultrasounds before abortions are performed. Apparently this farce is the best way for the senator to make his point.

Sen. Larry Farnese, D-Philadelphia, said he is suggesting the measure to show how ridiculous he thinks it is to propose subjecting women seeking abortions to ultrasounds. Farnese’s bill also would require men seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction to watch a videotape on the side effects of medication.

“No woman should be forced to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound if they don’t want or need the test,” Farnese said. “But for some reason, the Republicans in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives think that their degrading legislation is the right thing for female patients who are rightfully accessing their protected health services.”

Farnese wants to require written proof from a doctor that erectile dysfunction medication would benefit a patient. In addition, his proposal would require the man’s partner to sign an affidavit saying that the man suffers from erectile dysfunction, and pharmacists would have to see documentation of compliance with the law before filling erectile dysfunction prescriptions.

Really, there’s nothing so humiliating and degrading to a woman as to suggest she receive an ultrasound before having an abortion. An ultrasound is by far the most invasive procedure a woman could undergo! Thank goodness for legislators like Farnese who are there to look out for women’s best interests.

‘Common core insanity’! Mom knows ‘garbage math’ when she sees it [pic]

A mom whose child apparently attends school in New York City is not a fan of Common Core math. She recently posted a copy of this ridiculous math problem:

The Common Core standard that aligns to this question — CC.1.OA.6 — indicates that this convoluted problem is for first graders.

The mom who posted the problem, Amber Papadopoulos, previously tweeted numerous politicians urging that New York withdraw from Common Core:

Papadopoulos is just the latest in a long line of parents to post ridiculous Common Core math problem to Twitter. We recently wrote about a kid who missed a Common Core math problem because he didn’t use “friendly” numbers. In January, we noted a confusing Common Core problem that required first graders to use “number bonds” to complete a  “math story.”

Backlash to the Common Core standards has been growing around the country. Gov. Mike Pence, R-Ind., recently signed a law withdrawing his state from the program.
